Model: Searle Carawagon
Variant: 2286cc Petrol
1967 Searle Carawagon an absolute must have for the summer expedition
Purchased in 1967 By Nikolias Gromyko via Robert Searle of Sunbury on Thames this vehicle was converted from new directly from the factory.
There is some correspondence between the original owner and Searle to support this with purchase receipts and buff logbooks on file. Also the original Searle manual and a handfull of receipts for works carried out.
It left the Land Rover factory as a Right hand drive export model but was only exported as far as Sunbury on Thames!!
The vehicle was owned by the Gromyko family until around 2000. During this time several trips through Europe were carried out and one through the far east. As the story goes a sand storm removed most of the original petrol blue paint and so it was repainted in Limestone as it better reflected the heat whilst out there.
The vehicle lay dormant in the UK for some time and was purchased by its last owner a little down at the heal, the old tired diesel engine was replaced with a 2286cc fully reconditioned 5 bearing petrol engine that still resides in the vehicle today, giving great reliability and quieter driving.
A full repaint in Limestone was carried out to a good standard at the same time. The roof timbers and aluminium panels were also replaced so the pop top is in great condition having been refurbished and ready for immediate use.
The interior is largely original, it has the main seating area with a table to eat from, this all folds away to make a double bed and there is also a small bunk above for the smaller occupant. Complete with fridge, gas cooker, tap, water tank, air vents, all the original woodwork is present with storage cupboards, The chassis looks like new, its hard to believe it has been under the vehicle for some 51 years, it has been recently steam cleaned and wax-oiled. It has had a crossmember professionally installed in the past, the rest of the chassis is patch free.
The rest of the drive chain is to original specification with crash first and second gear and a fiery overdrive with free wheeling hubs. This classic land rover really is a pleasure to drive and I would have every confidence in driving it around Europe tomorrow.
